In
the fall of 2007, Ethel Dotson, one of Richmond’s
great environmental warriors, passed away. Ethel succumbed
to cancer that she believed was caused by chemical contaminants
in Richmond. As a member of the Richmond Southeast Shoreline
Community Advisory Group, Ethel fought bravely to rid Richmond
of these pollutants and create a cleaner, healthier city for
future generations. Ethel was also an outspoken advocate for
open space on the North Richmond shoreline, where she had spent
much of her childhood.
To commemorate her life, the North Richmond
Shoreline Open Space Alliance would like to dedicate a park
bench in her name in the Point Pinole Regional Park, overlooking
Breuner Marsh, which she fought so tirelessly to protect.
This fall, the North Richmond Shoreline Open Space Alliance
will hold a dedication ceremony as part of the 2009 Richmond
Shoreline Festival at Point Pinole Park. This memorial will
allow Richmond’s
current and future environmental warriors to sit and contemplate
Ethel’s accomplishments and the endless beauty of the
North Richmond Shoreline.
Please help the North Richmond Shoreline
Open Space Alliance in its effort to dedicate a bench in
Ethel’s
name. We need to raise $2,500 to pay for construction and maintenance
of the memorial bench. As of May 1, we have already raised
more than $1,000. No contribution is too small to help recognize
one of Richmond’s greats and protect the North Richmond
Shoreline.Ethel touched and inspired us all.
